Created in 2013, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for the Monitoring of Reforms and Public Action (CORAP) aims to positively promote and contribute to the social well-being of Congolese people.
CORAP’s general mission is to mobilise organisations and local communities to positively influence state policies in favour of the socio-economic interests of Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) grassroots communities. It aims to bring together a society who wish to promote favourable outcomes for the local community by putting pressure on the government to take into consideration the concerns of the Congolese people.
One of CORAP’s focuses is tackling concerns arising in the electricity sector. As there have been significant differences in pricing of electricity, many energy providers in private sectors refused to provide electricity as they being overtaxed compared to other companies. This resulted in majority of the Congolese population being left without any electricity.
CORAP aims to conduct a study to elucidate the issue of taxation for private sector companies in the development of the electricity sector. Specifically, the project’s objectives are to promote access of electricity for everyone, contribute to the respect of community rights and support the protection of the environment. Its goal is to document all these concerns with a view to advocating for sustainable solutions that put communities at the centre and promise environmental protection.
Synchronicity Earth is actively seeking to support CORAP in its endeavour to find sustainable ways of using energy through the Congo Basin Programme. Synchronicity Earth focuses on empowering these Congolese communities to resist and fight for their rights to electricity.
